Digital Buyers in Australia Demand Convenient Shipping

Retailers believe more options can boost sales

March 10, 2016

Australia is home to a mature ecommerce market, with a strong majority of internet users participating. And they expect a lot from retailers, research suggests.

Effects of Increasing the Number of Shipping Options Available at Checkout According to Retailers in Australia, Oct 2015 (% of respondents)

According to October 2015 research by Temando, most digital buyers in Australia expect a range of convenient delivery options when they shop online.

Three-quarters of digital buyers surveyed said they expected digital retailers to offer guaranteed weekend or after-hours delivery, for example, and 80% expected to be able to choose a specific time slot to receive their items. Even more common, 85% expected retailers to offer same-day shipping.

Not nearly as many retailers actually offered these options, however. Even same-day shipping was only offered by half of retailers surveyed.

Retailers could be missing out by skipping such offerings. First, some respondents were willing to pay a premium to get them. But also, retailers overwhelmingly believe they would increase sales if they had more shipping options available at the checkout. Most also think they would see fewer carts abandoned.

eMarketer estimates that 12.4 million people in Australia will make at least one digital purchase in 2016, or 80.0% of internet users in the country. Retail ecommerce sales will reach $20.66 billion this year, and by 2019 will rise to $25.61 billion.
