Bank Incursion: US consumers are increasingly willing to give payment and tech companies a try when using services traditionally offered by banks. Fiserv reports that more than half of respondents were OK paying bills using a payments firm, while 40% would use a tech company. Similarly, nearly a third said they would use a payments service to take out a loan, with almost as many saying the same about a tech firm.

Food Facts: The global consumer foodservice sector is set to grow to $3 trillion by 2021, according to Euromonitor International. Consumers are placing demand on food delivery, a channel expected to increase by 51% between 2016 and 2021. Better technology and improved menu items were two factors Euromonitor International credited with pushing growth.

China Invades Russia: Smartphone manufacturers in China appear to be repeating the success they've experienced in Asia-Pacific, only this time in Russia. Counterpoint Technology Market Research found that China-based smartphone brands accounted for one-quarter of smartphones shipped in Russia in Q2 2017. However, overall shipments of smartphones in Russia fell by 12% year over year in the quarter. One bright spot was the premium smartphone segment, in which high-end devices like Apple's iPhone did relatively well.

Tap Happy: Millennials are the UK's leading age demographic for contactless payment use, according to Visa's latest annual digital payments study. Over three-quarters (76%) of UK consumers ages 18 to 35 surveyed had made a contactless purchase, up from 65% in 2016. The share of seniors who had made a contactless transaction also rose, inching up 3 percentage points to 55%.

Search Surge: Revenues generated by China's search engines are growing. iResearch estimates, in the aggregate, search engine companies in the country generated RMB26.59 billion ($4.00 billion) in Q2 2017. That's a year-over-year bump of 15.65%, and an increase of 20.5% from the previous quarter. iResearch pegged the jump to the development of newsfeed ads by search engines.
