Key stats you need to know about today

July 20, 2017
Watching Budgets: Research from Deloitte looking at back-to-school shopping finds that many college students are budget conscious. More than eight in 10 said they plan to buy from retailers that offer free shipping, and nearly as many said they would buy more used textbooks to stretch their funds.

Travel Advocates: Can brands turn vacationers into positive brand advocates? Data from GlobalWebIndex reveals that roughly 40% of vacation buyers would do so in exchange for rewards like future discounts. Some (34%) would just do it because they love the brand.

Loyalty Momentum: Data from L2, looking at the successes and pitfalls of loyalty programs, found that being clear within email campaigns is imperative for loyalty program success. In fact, 77% of brands who mentioned loyalty in the subject of at least one email campaign during May 2017 saw a lift in open rates—from 19% to 24%.

Print Inserts Struggling: The number of print advertising inserts distributed in the UK fell 12.5% to 3.98 billion in 2016, according to figures released this week by the Direct Marketing Association – UK (DMA UK). A drop in print newspaper inserts was responsible for 70% of the decline, while magazine and third-party insert volumes remained steady. DMA UK predicts that print insert use could rebound next year, as an alternative to marketing efforts that involve too much handling of consumers' personal data once the EU's General Data Protection Directive is live.
