Stretchy Season: The back-to-school shopping season has become less consistent and predictable, NPD reports. One-third of back-to-school shoppers don't finish until September or later.

Broken Bonds: Americans are increasingly pessimistic about the country's ability to unite, Mintel finds. Only 27% said they are confident the country will start to unite. In this environment, calls for unity seem shallow, Mintel wrote.

Education Gap: According to a new survey by Burson-Marsteller, only 42% of Americans with a high school education or less think they have the skills to succeed, compared with 71% of those with at least a college education.

Who Tips Best?: Men, Republicans, Northeasterners and credit/debit card users are the best tippers, according to a new report. These groups tip a median of 20% when dining at a restaurant.
