Connected TV Users in Argentina Get Smart (TVs)

Streaming movies, TV series and YouTube videos are the most common connected TV activities

October 15, 2014

Argentina’s internet users are slowly turning to connected TVs for television and video viewing, among other things. May 2014 polling by Carrier y Asociados found that over 18% of households in Argentina with broadband access connected their TVs to the internet. Smart TVs were the most common connection type, cited by 61% of users. Second-place laptops and desktops saw less than half that percentage, and video game consoles as well as streaming boxes each grabbed very small pieces of the pie.

Connected TVs aren’t just for viewing video, but other May 2014 data from Carrier y Asociados found that this was still the most common reason for using connected TVs. Among internet users in Argentina who used a connected TV, 68% said they streamed movies and television series via such a device—the most popular activity—and the majority also watched YouTube videos.

However, users also called out browsing the internet or logging on to social network Facebook as connected TV activities. Fully 11% said they played online games, and a tiny percentage—6%—even used the larger screen to make calls via Skype. Just 5% didn’t use their connected TVs to go online at all.
