Retail ecommerce sales in Canada will reach C$29.63 billion ($26.83 billion) this year, eMarketer estimates, an increase of 16.8% over 2014 spending levels. Double-digit sales increases are expected through at least 2019, the end of our forecast period.
eMarketer has not changed its estimates for current retail ecommerce sales in Canada since earlier in the year. However, we have extended our forecast to cover 2019, when ecommerce sales in the country will reach nearly C$50 billion ($45.28 billion).
Currently, ecommerce accounts for 5.7% of total retail sales in Canada. By the end of our forecast period, in 2019, consumers in Canada will spend 8.8% of their retail dollars via digital.
In total, 18.1 million people in the country will buy something digitally this year, and 21.0 million people will research and browse products online, though they won’t necessarily complete a purchase that way. By 2019, nearly three-quarters of internet users in Canada will be digital buyers.
eMarketer’s forecasts and estimates are based on an analysis of quantitative and qualitative data from research firms, government agencies, media firms and public companies, plus interviews with top executives at publishers, ad buyers and agencies. Data is weighted based on methodology and soundness. Each eMarketer forecast fits within the larger matrix of all its forecasts, with the same assumptions and general framework used to project figures in a wide variety of areas. Regular re-evaluation of available data means the forecasts reflect the latest business developments, technology trends and economic changes.
