The vast majority of time mobile internet users in Canada spend with their iOS- and Android-based devices is spent with mobile apps, according to March 2015 data from Flurry. Browsers accounted for just 14% of time spent with such devices that month.
Facebook was the most common app activity, with 22% of total mobile time going to the Facebook app alone. Twitter got just 1% of mobile time. Other messaging and social apps garnered 14%.
While sessions with messaging and social apps were growing faster than the average across all apps, other categories were making much more significant gains by this metric. Sessions with health and fitness apps more than doubled vs. the prior year, while sports apps and utility and productivity apps each increased sessions by 88%.
The only app category getting fewer sessions than in March 2014 was lifestyle and shopping, which was down 3%. Game app sessions held steady over the period.
eMarketer estimates that the number of smartphone users in Canada will be up 13.1% this year to 20.3 million, while the tablet audience will increase 10.5% to reach 15.1 million.
