More than 23 million slate tablets were shipped in Western Europe last year, according to a March 2017 report from the International Data Corporation (IDC) that examined PC and tablet shipments in the region. Although slate tablets will continue to have the highest number of shipments until at least 2021, the total number will see declines each year. In 2017 alone, close to 2 million fewer such tablets will be shipped.
At the same time, the numbers of shipments for ultraslim notebooks and detachable tablets will increase.
Though ultraslim notebook shipments totaled just 9 million in 2016—the fourth most-shipped PC or tablet in Western Europe that year—IDC estimates that figure will rise to 13.9 million by 2021, when it will rank second only to slate tablets.
Though detachable tablets won’t see quite the rise in ranking compared to ultraslim notebooks, their growth will still be substantial. While 4.6 million of those devices were shipped in 2016, that number is projected to reach 7.4 million in four years—an increase of almost 3 million.
