Smart TVs are by far the most common devices internet users in China have implemented as part of the internet of things (IoT).
According to December polling by Tencent Penguin Intelligence, nearly two in five internet users surveyed had a smart TV or set-top box to hook up TV sets to the internet.
Smart bands were the No. 2 IoT device owned, but it was a distant second place: Fewer than 10% of respondents had one.
A forecast from the Beijing All View Cloud Data Technology Company predicted smart TVs would continue to be the most common smart home appliances in China for the next several years.
The firm expects 93% of households in China to have a smart TV in 2020. Just over half will have a smart air conditioner that year, while other smart home appliances will be somewhat less prevalent.
Various research firms have estimated IoT sales and connected-device sales in China in the coming years. iiMedia Research estimated in April 2015 that IoT sales would reach RMB755.6 billion ($121.30 billion) in 2015, up 21.9%. The same estimates put smart-home device sales at RMB43.1 billion ($6.92 billion) last year. In July, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) estimated lower IoT sales, of RMB500 billion ($80.27 billion), for 2015
