Tablet gaming revenues to grow by nearly 400% between 2012 and 2016
Global mobile gaming revenues from tablets are gaining ground on those from smartphones, according to research by Newzoo. The gaming market research and consulting firm reported that tablet game revenues would grow by nearly 376.2% between 2012 and 2016, compared with about 98.6% for smartphones over the same time period.
As tablet gaming revenues increase worldwide, the gap between smartphones’ and tablets’ shares of the mobile gaming market is closing. In 2012, tablets accounted for just over 23% of the mobile gaming market, while smartphones boasted a portion of nearly 77%—a 54-percentage-point lead. Though smartphones will still grab the majority of mobile gaming revenues worldwide in 2016, the difference in revenue share between the two devices will shrink to 16 percentage points as tablets expand their reach to claim about 42% of the market.
No matter the device, there’s no denying the fact that mobile gaming revenues are rising. Newzoo determined that the market overall would grow by about 162.6% between 2012 and 2016. More recent data from Frost & Sullivan was relatively in line with Newzoo’s figure, reporting that mobile gaming revenues worldwide would increase by 140.8% between 2013 and 2018. Since mobile gaming revenues have already started picking up in recent years, Frost & Sullivan’s later start date, as well as its longer forecast time period, may account for the firm’s slightly lower growth estimate.
eMarketer estimates mobile gaming revenues in the US will reach $1.78 billion this year, up from $1.36 billion in 2012. Of that, $746 million will come from ads.
