Fantasy sports players are known for their passion and dedication to their digital teams. Based on May 2014 polling conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs, this enthusiasm is on the rise, with the number of players in North America hitting the highest total out of the five years the study had been conducted, at 41 million.
According to the survey, 14% of US internet users ages 12 and older played fantasy sports, compared with 12% in 2012, totaling nearly 36 million players. Men were far more likely to draft—or at least try to draft—their dream teams, with 22% of males playing, compared with just 6% of females.
Based on January 2014 research by YouGov, the lower number of female players was likely due to less interest in sports among the demographic overall. When asked why they did not plan to watch the 2014 Winter Olympics, 28% of female adults in the US said they just didn’t like sports in general, compared with 11% of male respondents.
Ipsos Public Affairs found that fantasy players skewed younger. Nearly one-quarter of millennials, those ages 18 to 34, were looking to create their ideal sports teams online. In all, younger men were more likely to play than any other demographic, with 31% of 12-to-29-year-old males participating in fantasy leagues.
