Retail tablet searches in the UK have soared by 198% in the first quarter of 2013 compared with the same period last year according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC), in partnership with Google, as consumers begin to shop using the tablets many acquired at Christmas. Tablets were the star buy over the Christmas period, with many new and inexpensive Android models coming to market.
Growth in searches by tablet overtook growth in smartphone searches, which still increased rapidly, growing by 66%. Overall retail search growth was 16% year on year.
Retail search growth reflects UK consumers’ quick uptake of online retailing; SAS and Verdict Research predicted that retail ecommerce sales would hit £35.3 billion ($56 billion) this year to account for nearly 12% of total retail sales.
The BRC study also showed that while mobile devices are driving growth in retail search, there is also strong overseas interest in UK retailers. International searches for UK brands grew by 16% and searches from US consumers, in particular, were up 75%.
