The local YouTube site in Sweden celebrated its fifth anniversary last week, as the Google-owned video-sharing community launched local websites in neighboring Denmark, Finland and Norway.
The Nordic expansion may not come as a surprise based on the success of YouTube.se since its launch in 2008. In early February, Google estimated that there were one million unique daily visitors to the site’s homepage, and an average 25 million video clips were viewed each day compared to 1.2 million five years ago.
YouTube is already popular in other Nordic countries as well, ranking as the third and fourth most visited website in Denmark and Finland respectively, according to June data from iProspect Nordic. Research by TNS Gallup Norway also in June showed that 12% of internet users in Norway visited the site daily. Among 15- to 29-year-olds, the figure rose to 18%.
The expansion is expected to bring new opportunities for both YouTube users and advertisers. Users will see content that is more relevant to them, as videos that are especially popular in Denmark, Finland and Norway will be featured on the respective local sites. And local advertisers will now be able to purchase and run banner, text and video ads directed specifically toward visitors in those three countries.
