eMarketer Revises Online Ad Spending Predictions

APRIL 1, 2009

Positive growth still expected in 2009

NEW YORK (April 1, 2009)—eMarketer has revised its Internet ad spending projections, estimating that advertisers will spend $24.5 billion online this year in the US. That estimate is slightly lower than the one eMarketer put out in November 2008, which said that US online advertising spending would reach $25.7 billion in 2009. But it is important to note that the lowered estimate still represents an increase of 4.5% over 2008 spending.

After years of soaring growth, online advertisers have started pumping the brakes, but that’s no reason to see a glass half empty.

“Particularly in this economy, it has to be considered good times when US online ad spending reaches record highs, as it did in Q4 2008 at $6.1 billion and as it will in 2009 at $24.5 billion,” said David Hallerman, senior analyst and author of the report “US Advertising Spending: The New Reality.”

eMarketer benchmarks its US online ad spending projections against the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB)/PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) data.
