A Springboard Research report estimates that the Indian mobile TV market could bring $360 million in revenues in 2008.
A survey of 1,215 mobile users in six major Indian cities found that 84% of respondents were interested in using mobile TV services, provided it was available and affordable.
Almost 60% said they would like to watch the same content they watch on TV at home. The most popular types of content were news, sports, music videos and game shows.
“A majority of mobile users in India are interested in trying out mobile TV and would invest in new handsets for using
the service," said
Ravi Shekhar Pandey, manager at Springboard Research. "This willingness is definitely a
positive sign for those considering offering mobile TV in one of the world’s
largest and fastest-growing mobile services market.”.
As a result, Springboard says there could be up to 12 million mobile TV subscribers within the first year of launch. This would represent about 5% to 6% of the total mobile subscriber base in India.
