Over 40% of online 18-to-21-year-olds now own a credit card, according to a new report by Forrester Research.

The research shows that more than half of online 20- and 21-year-olds have credit cards, and 31% of online 18- and 19-year-olds have credit cards.

Overall, nearly two-thirds of the "Gen Z" group used the Web to apply for their credit cards, and about a third of them applied for a credit card over the Web during the past 12 months.

Capital One is the most popular credit card among this group, with a 20%-plus share of credit cards held by online youth.

Bank of America, Chase and Citi each have about 13% of this demographic.

About 21% of online 18-to-21-year-old cardholders plan to switch from Chase and American Express cards in the next 12 months.
